I might be a bit late on the subject but i think it's never too late to tell you what a fucking
idiot you are.
You are just taking this whole thing terribly out of context.
This is just supposed to place a smile on someone's face with the simplest thing like a hug.
No one is going to change 5000 years of history on a fifth of the world's poulation by standing
on the road for a couple of hours with a sign. but you might just lighten a dozen people's day.
It's just a demonstration that one person can make a diference.
And about that guy in Hangzhou, Damn you're so full of shit. I you were gonna be chinese on that
poor soul, you wouldn't have even looked at him, even less remembered it or stayed around to
find out how long it took for the ambulance to show up. get you story straight.

"I’ll kick a dog to make a girl think I’m tough. I’ll mock migrant workers shabby clothes. I’ll treat everybody who doesn’t make as much money as I do like a piece of fuckin’shit"
Get some therapy, bro. This is text book superiority complex. And you are actually not supposed
to tell people about it.

"Just look at the sparse population and complete absence of an elicit sex industry."
Yeah, Right. Have you walked around the streets in china? There isn't a single day that I come home from work without seeing Sex Dvd's, hidden Porn shops and being offered dirty magazines by paperstand's owner that think that
just because I am a foreigner here, I a sex addicted.

I am just sorry that I lost 10 minutes reading and commenting this horseshit.

Didn't anyone ever teach these girls that hugging gets you pregnant? "Free Brojobs" or "Free Butt Sex!" would be much more compatible with China's efforts to slow population growth.

I've got to say, I really do hope hugging doesn't catch on. Not that it's bad for people to be promoting, you know, the realization that there are human beings other than oneself and all that -- but seriously, would-be huggers? Don't fuckin' touch me.

(1) If this is a campaign that has been organised abroad, then it does look like some (political) movement brought in from outside

Hugs aren't political. If hugs were political, then politics would be a lot nicer. Bombs are more political, which given the reception hugs got, may have been more appropriate.

Well, sorry to swim against the flow here a bit.
(1) If this is a campaign that has been organised abroad, then it does look like some (political) movement brought in from outside
(2) Public demonstrations are a touchy subject, and the participants should have known this. And this does look somewhat like a public demonstration.

From Reuters "In the capital, police moved in and took away four huggers briefly for questioning, baffled by their wacky, Western-style activities on a busy downtown shopping street."
Briefly? That suggests that they were released afterwards. And, in Changsha and and Xian there were no arrests.

Yes, it is a cool thing, which this country needs, but being realistic about it, is it possible that everyone here could start hugging? Is it desirable that everyone here should start hugging? I'm not so sure that the answers are as obvious as everyone is making out. Why is it necessary that complete strangers should be hugging in public? Is it something that would be desirable if it became normal?

There are a lot of issues here, but not really any big news story. An arrest that possibly wasn't, of some folks who shouldn't have been surprised at it, and the exciting discovery that it takes a bit longer to change habits than just one day.

Excellent. I have to support the Chinese police on this one. I wish the Chinese police could have cleaned up the year-round Burning Man crowd, from when I lived in San Francisco. Those characters just got old real quick.
